It was raining medals for the SKIHAWKS at the 2012 Washington State Special Olympics State Games. More than 1,500 Special Olympics athletes representing Washington hometowns ranging from Bellingham to Vancouver and Seattle to Spokane attended the 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games in Wenatchee, March 2-4.
Opening Ceremonies were held at the Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee on Friday, March 2 beginning at 8 p.m. Grand Marshal Phil Mahre led the parade of athletes and opened the 2012 Winter Games. SKIHAWKS athlete and Special Olympics Washington board member, Angela Martin, did the introduction of the famed skiing legend.
Athletes from across the state converged on Wenatchee and Leavenworth to compete in six sports during the three-day event: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowboarding, Figure Skating and Basketball. The 1,500 athletes were supported by nearly 300 coaches and 700 volunteers.
